oncidium - is this the beginning of a spike?

I've had my oncidium for about a year and a half. I got it when it had already spiked and when all of the blooms died I cut that spike back. Since then, I've had two new bulbs (and leaves) grow, but it hasn't flowered again. Today I noticed this tiny bump just on the outside of the newest bulb. I know it's not a great picture, but could this be the start of a spike? Or is it another bulb?

Usually spikes come from inside the sheath of the p-bulb, not the outside of the p-bulb. But, the photo is very dark and it is hard to tell. Guess we will know in a few weeks.

Hi Sark, and WELCOME to Orchid Talk! I'm no expert with oncidiums, but DO have one which blooms at least twice a year. I have noticed that the "bloom spike" always forms beside the larger leaf, next to the bulb. Hope this helps...Betty :-)

interesting, so betty, when yours has spiked it wasn't from inside the sheath, but rather, outside the bulb?

Looks like the beginning of a new growth. Many of my oncidiums are sending out new growths like crazy. The bloom spikes usually form, as Betty said, from inside the leaf next to the bulb. Once a spike forms they grow quickly.

Sark, oncidiums usually have two leaves at the base of the bulb. At the bottom of the large leaf, next to the bulb is where the "spike" forms. That is as detailed as I can get...at any rate, you'll know for sure soon enough! Post a pic. in a few weeks and let us know, too! Betty :-)
