hi everyone, just wanted to share. actually it is my first catasetum species that came into bloom![]()
It would be nice to see more than half of one flower....
congratulations!
Looks really dark!! How does the spike look? Does it have many blooms at a time?
Cheers,

Thats quite unique color combination and shape !
It seem that there are many bloom. Nice catasetum.
here are pic of the full spike, 9 of them together. bulbs about 4inches tall, two bulbs of total
Thanks for these pics. Quite a handsome thing. I guess these are the male flowers, they are usually the most handsome... I'll say no more along that line of thought lest I see the lynch party approaching !
Actually , getting the duller peculiar female flowers or the brighter more distinctive-shaped male ones, in catasetums and their close allies is supposed to be related to temperature or light , I forget which, but so far of the ( less than a dozen, I have to admit ) species I have flowered, I have yet to see a female flower - or the rarer hermaphrodite spike, with both kinds on, which I have only ever read about.
BTW Jay illustrates a green colour form of this species, which is quite nice , worth looking out for ( although catasetae are not so common in dealers lists that one gets to pick and choose much ). He also says it is perfumed - comment ?
