Question Watering Vanda's in a basket

    Good day all,

Was wondering if someone could offer me some advice on how to water my new and first Vanda. The Vanda is in a slated Vanda basket and the roots are probably 2 feet long. I have well water and a water softener so I water all of my orchids with distilled water. I also have a RO system on my kitchen sink, but the roots are so long not sure if I can water them under the RO faucet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a couple Vandas and I throughly spray down the whole plant and the roots. Usually twice a day now that the weather is warming and the light intensity increasing. You can take the RO water from your kitchen and put it in a pump up sprayer.

My vanda ( one ) gets misted once a day, and soaked with water once a week. It is fertilized once a week...Betty :-)

I would to the RO water. Don't us distilled unless you are replacing some of the essential trace elements.

Smile Watering Vanda's in a basket

    Hi All,

Thanks so much for the responses so far. I like the sprayer idea, but was wondering; I use MSU liquid fertilizer for RO weakly, weekly, would it be wise to put it in the spray bottle and fertilize it daily, or just once weekly? Also, when I bought my first orchid I was using distilled water based on information I found off the internet, however, since I have discovered that RO is very similar to distilled I now just water with RO and MSU liquid fertilizer.

Betty, I was wondering with your once weekly soaking and then daily misting how long have you had your Vanda and I am guessing that your Vanda is doing well with this regimen?

Thanks again all, and I am very happy to have found you all

Cynthia, it was a small plant when I got it 18 months ago, but has grown very well. I think it will bloom either this Summer or next...I have been using 30-10-10, and sometimes fish elmulsion on it. Betty :-)
