    Smile Nun Orchid - Phaius

Mu first Nun never bloomed properly due to aphids, but i couldn't resist bringing home this one from work yesterday. It's much prettier than the first one though I don't know the name because someone removed the tag. Those pesky customers don't you know! But I'll try to find out These are as easy to grow as Phals supposedly. They are terrestial and enjoy the same conditions as peace lillies as far as I know.

I'n new here, but I don't see these listed in any of the books I have and was really surprised when our buyer brought them in. They were only in spike and we couldn't wait to see what the blooms would be like. Worth the wait I think.

I have a couple of these. I ignore them...sit them out with my regular plants and water them when I remember. I have one in spike looking pretty, although the leaves look awful. Mine is in spagnum and even though I never repotted like I should have it's growing new pbulbs like crazy. I love the colors on yours...very nice.

As far as I know Kim. The orchid society member who also bought one said she would be summering hers outdoors and I'll probably do the same if I can find a good shady spot. I think they are grown as regular border plants outdoors in Australia and other places, warm places, not here in still very cold (and really, I'm tired of it now) Michigan.

I also never knew these existed. The blooms are splendid and I like the bamboo form/shape of this plant. How neat to work at a local nursery. Do they get in many orchids/tropicals? AL

    Hi Al,
I do like my job, but I spend almost as much as I earn there. Too much temptation. I love to garden!

We get lots of tropicals pretty much all year round and we carry phals all year too but we get the most orchids in late January for our Orchid Festival. They run specials and have people from the local orchid society give presentations. But we don't usually get anything too unusual. This was a rare exception.

I'm going to an orchid show on April 16th and I'm sure there will be lots of wonderful plants there.

    Cindy

Looks like it might be Phaiocalanthe Kryptonite or a similar hybrid. Unfortunately you'll never know for sure unless the grower can be contacted and they happen to know.
