Coelogyne ochracea var lemoiniana
One of the smaller , and notionally cool growing Coelogynes - but growing for me with everything else including my Vandas and Cattleyas. Maybe I am at the cooler end of the range ofd temperatures for them, and the warmer end of the range for the Coelogyne.
The variety refers to the coloured patch on the lip. In the type species it is orange. There are one or two other varieties too . One of our UK orchid nurseries for many years had a big (usually Gold medal) display at our Chelsea Flower Show ( which is one of the biggest flower shows in UK - and attracts all the aristrocracy, movie stars,High Court Judges, Royal Family etc.,- many of whom go - I suspect - because it is part of the London Social Season, along with Ascot Races, Wimbledon Tennis etc., rather than out of any love for gardens ; or maybe I malign them ! ) and they always had a wide belt of these plants at the front of the stand along the whole length of it ;the point was that they are sweetly scented, and hence this attracted all the visitors to their stand. It was in seed-raising these plants over many years , and selecting carefully, that the varieties appeared. In the old wild-collected plants they were all the type variety.
Like many Coleogynes it seems to have a low tolerance for fertiliser, and readily burns the tips of the leaves . I ought to make up a different weeaker batch for it, but life gets a bit too difficult at that stage. Instead I have opted for the simpler trick of trimming the picture so that you won't see the burnt leaf tips.
