I got a cutting from a Hoya carnosa (we think?) that apparently is very old (owner has had it 30 years per her report to me). I was told that it will take a significant time in dormancy to root, then would grow for a year or two, and finally would begin blooming on its own. So, I stuck it out, and it has several clumps of blooms this year that are just opening. It was definitely worth the wait. Here is the photo of one clump. It has a very peculiar smell, which I'm sure any of you who grow hoyas will know what I'm talking about.
