Who's Using Miracle Gro Attachment for Fertilizing?

Hi all,

I was reading through some posts and a few members had mentioned that they use the miracle gro attachment on their orchids. What a brilliant idea. I've seen it at big box stores and thought something like that could make fertilizing much easier. Right now, I do it old school with gallon size bottles.

I'm assuming that we are talking about the attachment that goes onto a garden hose. How do you all calculate the amount of liquid (or powder) fertilizer you use?

My greenhouse is fertilized using a fertilizer system where I pre-mix whatever brand fertilizer 1/4 of the strength recommended on the label. This is fed through the garden hose. I would not use the pre-mixed attachment thing in my greenhouse as the fertilizer would be too strong for the orchids and could cause burns. If you use the jar attachment, you can simply divide the liquid or powder by 4. Be sure to water first to ensure that you are not wasting your fertilizer. Wetting the roots allows them to be ready to take in the fertilizer. And remember to be sure to water with plain water the next time to wash away any remaining salts from the fertilizer.

Hmmm. I have been using "specially formulated" fertilizers - this one for cymbidiums, this one for phals and paphs, this one for.... Looks like I should take it easy and just fertilize!

When doing the plain water flush, do you use tap water? The water here is hard and I wonder if it does a sufficient job at flushing out the fertilizer salts.

Yes, we use water right from the tap and let it run thought the pot. I have no experience using hard water on orchids, so I will leave that part of your question to someone who can answer from her/his experience.
