Named in honor of Mario Portilla, co-discoverer of this species.

This species is found in the rain forest along the Rio Calagras, Ecuador. It grows at altitudes around 1500m.

Best grown mounted in high humidity, RH above 85%, strong air movement and 12-22ºC. Plant size 5-6cm. The flowers are about 2 cm across. The photos show the lip both open and closed.
