Phal with root rot - any advice would be appreciated

Hi Guys,

I hope this post finds you well.

I have a phal that up until a few weeks ago had been drowned on a regular basis.
There are a lot of rotten roots but still some good ones from what I can see.

What concerns me is:
- the furry white residue collecting around the upper roots, and
- that there is some green mould (??) starting to grow within the pot itself.

I have had a good read through the (very helpful) information on this site but I would like someone to take a look at some photos.

I’m happy to repot but would love some advice on the type potting mix and whether I need to treat the plant with fungicide etc while doing so…
There’s a lot of information out there so I really need some advice as to which to follow

Ok, I'm sorta new too, but I had a similar problem and the advice I got was : repot in bark mix (not moss), use a fungicide (physan 20 was recommended and is what I used), cut off the black or mushy roots with sterile knife or scissors (bleach or fire sterilized) and cross your fingers. I had a hard time finding supplies locally where I live and mail ordered them instead. Keep in a pot that's pretty snug. Especially if you end up cutting roots down.

Some of those roots actually look pretty good One rule to always remember, is NEVER LET AN ORCHID SIT IN WATER (although there is one exception...) because they hate wet feet. What you could do, is:

Pull the orchid from the pot, bark and all. Chop off the brown or mushy roots. Then, soak in a dish of water, enough to cover the entire root ball, with one or two grains of potash mixed in (it is a good disinfectant). Soak for about an hour. Then rest on a paper towel and dry for a bit, or until a waxy coating starts to cover the green roots. Repot into a fresh mix of bark (orchiata is the best, but it costs a lot for you guys, its cheap for us ) that has been soaking over night, and then every two weeks, give it a spray weakly with some liquid sulphur (maybe 1/4 what it says on manufacturers directions) and continue for about 6 weeks. Then start with an ongoing fertilizer regime, following the rule weakly, weekly, or even every two weeks. The watering after this, make sure you flush the media well with clean water to get rid of any mineral deposits.

In situations like that, what i will do is to cut-off the deadroots with a sterilized shears (apply alcohol in your hands also when you are handling the plant) then i'll fill a container with a half-gallon of water and around half a cup of bleach/chlorox then dunk the orchid (up to the first 2 leaves from the roots) and leave it there for 5-minutes. Then that's it. works everytime. But before pulling off the orchid from the "bleached water" cleanse your hands with alcohol first.
