Phal and Phal X Doritis hybreed difference

Hi All,


Could anyone please tell the difference between an Phalaenopsis hybreed and a Phalaenopsis X Doritis hybreed.

Current taxonomy is moving to being no difference. Many taxonomists are changing the species in genus Doritis to be in the genus Phalaenopsis. In the past, Doritis hybrids with Phalaenopsis simply meant that Doritis pulcherrima was used as part of the breeding to get the hybrid. In general Doritis gave a more upright spike and more flowers as well as the bright pink color when the typical form was used. Any specific physical differences would depend on the amount of Doritis in the background of the hybrid.

Like Susan said, Doritis is a separate genus, and naturally, they actually tend to grow semi-terrestrial therefore, arching spikes would be no use. The need upright spikes. Phals naturally have larger blooms then Doritis, and tend to grow as epiphytes and grow with the plant pointing downwards, and the spikes arch downwards as a result, and also, upright spikes on a tree are again not much use. Combine the two, and you may get Doritis pulcherrima shape in the blooms, but the growth habit of the phal, or visa-versa. Simple genetics really.

Not easy to tell apart unless you are dealing with a primary hybrid that shows quite obvious doritis characteristics.

Ah, many thanks for this... im just curious because in a store that i visit i noticed some of their so called phals have different traits, some have arching spikes with bloom some have steady upright steep floral spikes, yet the plants are the same as you cant tell all of them apart if they dont have flowers
