My box store garden centre dendrobium is so happy it's flowering again. But it's also so happy that one stalk is sending out about a dozen white roots from a sort of joint about 1.5" from soil level. Right now they're long enough that they're beginning to take root.
My question is - can I cut off the stalk below the roots, if so, how far below, and pot a new plant? What is the ideal potting medium for the most common dendrobiums? Do thy like moss only, moss & bark mixed?
Went to my first orchid show this past weekend - very interesting. It was the first time I'd seen a slipper orchid in flower and was ready to blow a bundle on either a cattleya with two huge blooms or a blue Vanda. But I'd remembered the advice in this forum about growing blue Vandas, and with being in Zone 5, I only admired it & left it behind.
Also enjoyed sniffing at a chocolate-scented flower although I couldn't smell the other that claimed to be pepper scented. It was just a shame that there were so many phals. and so few others there in flower. I have nothing against phals., have loads (too many) myself but at a show I want to see something very different. Great orchid education though.
