    Default Encyclia cochleata/Green Hornet? and E radiata

    Here we have what I bought online as Prosthecea radiata, but I reckon it is Green Hornet. Any comments? I am a bit of a rookie... Anyway it is a super little (now not so very little) plant that is a first class performer and I can smell it already as I come down the stairs of a morning. A pure delight!

    Below is E radiata which has a perfection hard to show in a photo. The whole plant has a subtle silvery bloom and elegant shape... milky flowers give off a powerful, somewhat medicinal fragrance: the place smells like an upmarket doctor's surgery.

    BY THE WAY! I am happy that here in this forum you guys seem to call these plants ENCYCLIA (yay!) and not "Prosthechea" (ugh!) I have my reasons.

    Sorry- I made a typing slipup in the opening of my text: it should of course say COCHLEATA not radiata! What a doofus.

    I also have a green hornet and it was just opening when I left home for vacation. I really love it. I understand that one should never cut the spike as it will continue to grow and bloom. Is that correct? Love both your pics. The second pic is beautiful. Thanks for sharing and reminding me what is at home waiting for me in two weeks.

    Hi Bill. Hmm- I am 99% sure no and I always cut... and you would't want to leave them anyway because this is not a shy bloomer and it does send up (multiple) spikes in at least two flushes a year. Each flowering seems to last forever as it is partially sequential. And the yummy smell. It is win/win.

    I am by nature a spike cutter, usually even with phals; I much prefer nice new shapely elegant spikes... and phal hybrids are so generous that on any given plant there is almost always a spike either in flower or in growth. However there is a phal which I have not despiked ever since I got it 3y ago because it refuses to stop flowering- the spike simply gets longer and hangs ever lower. Meanwhile a second spike has developed alongside and is in flower. Crazy.

    HVALA BRANKA! Guess what- recently I realized I actually prefer the daintier Encyclias and to the shameless flamboyance of the Big Cats... But I had to realise my childhood dream and nurture some giants into bloom. Goodness, I do love Encyclias- there are so many of them and many are perfumed. A person could have a collection of nothing but Encyclias, I guess!
