Making holes to clay pots

How can you make holes in clay pots?
I have a couple of orchids on clay pots with holes on them and they are doing great there.
Does anyone know how to do this? Thank you

You need a power drill. Use a masonry bit and keep things wet. My partner drills while I spray with water.

Hi nuecas! I use a 1/2" masonry drill bit for the terracotta pots. I started drilling an 1/8" pilot hole first but found if careful I didn't really need to. You have to use a little pressure while drilling but watch out, the bit gets hot! (I haven't used water) Some clay pots are easier to drill than others so just experiment (you might break a pot or two ) and you'll find it's not hard.

You all are brave making holes in clay pots . . Sounds a bit scary to me. . .I wonder if those diamond bits would work . . Definitely think the using water or at least soaking the pot would help . . .but if its a glazed pot I would think it might fracture or even shatter . .

totally agree with Jason, keep it wet, this helps protect the drill bit tip as well. remember not to use the hammer mode on the drill, or else you may end up with pieces of broken pots.

Soak the pot good, overnight would be nice. You may have to toss your bit afterwards, the clay really does a number on them. I have drilled fired pots also, the trick there is slow, slow, slow.

Hmm...so you all don't just drop them on the floor? I find cracking the pot and knocking a chunk off one corner works great for drainage...and yes we girls do things differently.

I buy pots with holes in them already made before they were baked, because I have broken too many pots trying to drill holes, with a drill machine, nail and hammer etc etc, soaking the pots before trying to make holes all possible things, they usually crack.
