Psychopsis Mariposa 'Green Valley'--Our First Butterfly

My husband fell in love with the butterfly orchids at a show a couple of years ago, so one followed us home (but without any blooms). This past August we noticed a spike forming, and now, eight months later, we have our first bloom!!! We expected the spike to be bigger, but at 6 inches, it barely clears the leaves.

I couldn't resist adding the third photo--the butterfly and the bee.

Lovely bloom. I love these so much. I have two. One is small and am so anxious for it to spike. The larger one has been blooming on the same spike for over two years. It is about to bloom again. Seems to put out a flower every three or four months. Be sure to leave the spike on ur plant after the bloom dies. They can and will bloom for years off the same spike. Love your bloom and great pics. Congratulations! Your husband has great taste.

Your husband made a wonderful choice in acquiring this orchid. It should reward you with blooms with some consistentcy for years to come. Eventually you will have more than one bloom at a time and those spikes will soar three feet. AL

I would say to give it more water. I had one that refused to bloom and got the advice for more water and more light. Yours looks pretty light green, so I assume it is getting plenty of light. It is weird that the spike is so short. Mine usually reach 2'. Lovely bloom though. Great color.

I have a mariposa as well. I think that it is producing a spike but it might be a new growth. I am not sure only time will tell. I hope it's a spike though . Yours is very pretty.
