Bulb. claptonense vs. Bulb. lowii

I was browsing around the interwebs today to get a better understanding of what my new bulbo needs to thrive and noticed something interesting: many sites claim that claptonense and lobbii are synonymous, but some claim there is a difference in the lip (mainly a larger bump on the claptonense). The one I purchased is tagged claptonense, and is still fairly young so it probably won't bloom until next year.

I'm curious what you professionals out there say - are they the same, or slightly different? Is this a case of names changing as the years go by?

Bulb. claptonense is currently considered a synonym of Bulb. lobbii by the Kew Monocot List. At the same time, the RHS has accepted claptonense as a parent for a number of crosses. There are several species(or not) in the lobbii "complex" that are variously believed valid species or synonyms by various authorities. I'm not aware of any dna testing that has been performed on this group. Don't change your tag.

Bulb lobbii is so variable that what vendors claim is claptonense may be just another form of lobbii. I bought a 'claptonense' from a vendor last year who pointed out to me that the so-called claptonense can be IDed by the presence of the raised callii running down the middle of the lip as opposed to the absence of these on the lobbii. At the moment my tag reads 'Bulb claptonense/lobbii'.

Aaahhh I see! These are both species though? When you put the photos next to each other, it's much easier to see the difference. (I like claptonense better hehehe)

clapto is what we call clapto and what zainal showed you. lobbii got many many forms which, maybe, should have be named differently...but they aren't.

Thanks Zainal for the photos. The raised callus on the lip of the claptonense is clearly seen in the pictures.
