Doritis pulcherrima too early?!

Got these as a free gift with purchase a few weeks ago at a local orchid nursery. They are in 2" pots. Since I am not familiar with this type or orchid, I have no idea what is going on with it. Is this a spike or something else. It is so tiny I can't imagine it is a spike???

Thanks Angela, I noticed it today when i was out misting. It certainly was not there when I received them. Is this a mini orchid of something? I got two and this thing is so tiny!!!! I could squish the entire plant between my thumb and forefinger! Maybe it likes all the light. They were growing in a green house at the nursery but now they are on my back patio.

I am more concerned about the size, I will need a magnifying glass to view the blooms!

Yep, a spike for sure! This species is pretty miniature, though as they grow they not only put out more leaves/get taller like most Phals (which this is currently considered to be), but also put out lots of basal growths so in time you'll have a clump. They definitely like more light than most Phal species, I've seen in-situ pics that suggest they often grow in very bright sun on exposed rocks that get seasonally flooded. Flowers tend to be pretty small but a well grown plant will make a lot of them; the one I have right now is a wild-type with flowers to about 1 cm wide, though I've seen line-bred ones with substantially bigger blooms than that. Great freebie to pick up!

Me too! It sprouted up so quickly! I am in Vancouver now and can't wait to get back home to see what it has done!
