From the title of this thread, I expected a blood red catasetum bloom. haha... Orchid names... Cool blooms Ian. The blood red dark center is so nice and provides such a wonderful contrast to the speckled bloom of this orchid.
cheers,

yeap...there is a lot of variation in sanguineum coloration. here is the appearance of the flower when it is almost at full bloom
would like to make some changes to this thread,
after posting this pic in the internet, i received feed back that this may be the long lost catasetum naso.
i began reading and here is what i found
catasetum naso
tenuously lacerate margin only near the base as they merge with the column (while snaguineum lateral borders are more prominently lacetate)
pedicles of naso measure up to 20mm long while sanguineum measures acound 10mm only.
flowers of naso are more distantly arranged from each other, the spaces within each bracts is about 30mm while for sanguineum, the flowers are more tightly arranged together.
some of the similarities that they share are erected spike, non resupinated flowers, deep saccated lip with round orifice, trilobe and with center lobe nose like projection.
thus, this is a Catasetum naso. sorry for the error in the first place
ok, ian, i think youve pushed me too far.... think i need to try my hand with the cats...MEOW!
Lovely!!!!
