Unidentified houseplants

Hi folks!

I've got these two plants, possibly of the same family and I have no idea what they are! Which means I don't really know how to take care of them Can anyone help with an ID? A friend guessed Dieffenbachia but I'm not sure that's correct...

The first one is a Diffenbachia (quite toxic if consumed actually) , the second one is possibly an Aglaonema not sure of it though. And you have Dracaena sanderiana (or the good luck bamboo)

The second and third shots are the same plant. So it's a form of bamboo?

No, it is not. Simply a case of a common name based on the resemblance some people see to bamboo.


Your cat would have to consume a fair amount of the dif to get sick. So definitely discourage your cat from nibbling on it, but no reason to live in mortal dread of it happening.

No actually there are three plants. Your pot no. 2 has the twisted Draecena and another plant the green leafy one I was talking about that.

same growth habit as bamboo but looks like a philodendron.....no its not a type of bamboo...... also lucky bamboo isnt a real bamboo

We had a large dif and my daughter tore the leaves off of it and scrunched them up in her hands. It made her hands numb for several hours.

the first, with mottled leaves is the agloanema, or chinese evergreen. the diffenbachia is also called 'dumb cane' because the sap fromt he leaves can make you lose your voice for a while. keep it away from any kid or animal. very toxic. the chinese evergreen, i don't think is nearly as toxic, but also be careful. those are coming in nice shades of red these days from thailand. expensive, but red!!!!!!!! i have 2 small red mottled kinds and they are great. your type does not need to be so close to the window, they like dim light, being from forests in asia, they get little bright light. they will grow slowly and stay a darker richer color with lower light. the red ones do need more light to get the deep red color, but will grow in low light also.

Coeruleo Has the names of the pictured plants in the correct order. I will also add to the facts about poisoning, if you cut the stem or trunk of the Diffenbachia, and the sap gets on to your skin it can cause intense itching.
