For those of you that grow in baskets outside, how often do you water? I am mostly growing Catts, Encyclias and Oncidiums in baskets.

During the summer months I water my cymbidiums every day. Everything else I keep in the greenhouse.

During the spring and summer I water my cattleyas and encyclias that are in baskets a minimum of twice a week and sometimes three times a week if it looks like they need it. My oncidiums I try to water about every other day. I only use big chunks of cork, chucks of tree fern and lava rock in the baskets so they don't retain much moisture. Start with a routine and see how the plants look after a couple weeks. You should be able to tell if they look healthy and well hydrated. If they look too dry, water a little more often.

well I live in the tropics and so I have the pleasure of rain or sun sometimes both in one day like this whole weekend, the nights are cool bearable so if I have constant sunny weather I wet them every other day or two because it is also windy so they dry out quicker, mine are in wire baskets in dried coconut husks and also mounted on pieces of tree branches too, then there are some in clay and concrete pots planted in dried coconut husks if your weather patterns are similar you can do that I guess, do you have snow there? or very cold nights?

Maggs, I live in Houston, Texas which has daily current temps around 90F. I would not call it tropical but definitely sub tropical. We are very humid normally and rain fall is frequent to infrequent (Lately more infrequent). My orchids are mostly in baskets with bark. I notice that most are completely dry by the next day after I water. Considering the heat and the average temps will go up to the mid to g upper 90's soon occasionally going to 100F or more, I've decided to water every other day. As for snow, it does not happen frequent enough to say we get snow. Years will go buy before we have the random snow fall that makes the news because of its rarity. We really only a couple of months of weather that anyone from the northern states would consider cold and even that is not constant. Many Decembers I am in shorts.
