The large flowered form of the species. Flowers 50% larger than on the ordinary species, at least in the two examples I have, one of each - and that is at the best. Actually I have had the ordinary version for 30 years or so, and it got a bit run down - too long without re-potting ( I have now split it, and put a few bits on a wood block mount as an alternative) but in run down condition, the ordinary one is only half the size of this, perhaps in all dimensions - leaves as well as flowers.
In South America, where it comes from, a few different variations have been shown and awarded - an all pink one, an all white one ( surely these are varieties of L.unicolor ?) and several with different flower habits, one even with a flat flower instead of the usual cup shape, It has also been used to a limited extent in breeding, mostly with the the older Laelias - cinnabarina, etc, but the ones illustrated in Orchidwiz don't get me running for my wish list. Some species can't be improved - perhaps ?
