should I repot this now or later?

Yam Queen Adelia 'Kiilani--in a 4" pot.

I planned last year to repot it this last Spring, but it had no new growths and was also spiking then later bloomed....so I haven't. It has bloomed at each blooming cycle the last approx. 3-4 yrs. since I've had it.

My question to you is...should I repot it now, wait until it finishes it's blooming decline or wait another year?

Really that is up to you. If you just out and out decided to dispense with repotting entirely, the plant would simply -- one day -- completely envelop the pot. At that point you could simply grow it as a hanging plant much like a vanda.

However, assuming you would prefer to continue growing it with the majority of roots inside a pot then I, personally, would recommend waiting until this flower spike is finished -- but then I tend to be rather clumsy and could easily foresee myself accidently snapping the spike off during a repot. No need to wait until next spring. The spring "rule" is really more of a suggested guideline ... not written in stone.

Do make sure, when you go to repot, that you soak the potted area for a time to soften up the roots and to make it easier to separate them from the terra cotta pot.

You may also want to just tap the pot with a hammer and leave the pieces attached to the roots if they don't want to let go. Then the whole bit - shards, roots and all - can go into another pot.

I would like to continue growing it with the roots inside the pot. The only thing I was actually concerned about is the fact that it hasn't shown new growth this year, so I was afraid that repotting without any might be a mistake. I understand better now that you have explained, though.....I thought that new growth was literally necessary before the re-pot.

I have done this before...seems to work great. Break the pot, that is. No broken roots that have grown to the pot sides, good air flow because of the shards.....best of both worlds. :>)

Thanks for the compliment..."nice show". You're kind. I love this cute little bloom with one of my favorite color combinations.
