Potting Mediums

Is there any reason why I shouldn't use decorative glass gems or marbles as potting medium?

They don't drain very well as the glass tends to hold moisture in between the individual marbles or gems, which is where you want air to flow to the roots.

I wouldn't recommend it, it typically leads to root rot or at least less than enthusiastic root growth.

If you were looking for something mostly inert and very airy i'd recommend lava rock.
