    Default Vanda Wong Poh Nee

Hello all, havent been here in a looooong time jejeje....I've had this vanda for some time now and this is its first blooming. I would like to know who could it be, some say that its Vanda JVB or Vanda TMA or some cross of JVB and I say that its Vanda Wong Poh Nee because of its lip but I really would like to know.

    Thank you All

No idea what it is, but it appears to be semi-terete and (just a guess) it might have V. tesselata in it. It's a nice hybrid. A lot of this kind of thing end up with the petals not presented flat like that. Good luck on the identification.

The lip, the overall colour and form of the blooms and the semi-terete plant itself all point to it being a V Josephine van Brero hybrid. There are literally thousands of plants and scores of hybrids that look like this growing in gardens and orchid collections in S E Asia. JVB has been crossed with numerous vandas and ascocendas to produce similar looking hybrids. It would be near impossible to to ID it with any certainty.

Could be V. Wong Poh Nee. I've seen some that were reddish, yellowish, and a dull purple-brown (mine is like this). All have a lip shaped like yours, but the colors vary (mine is purple), and all are reported to have a strong sweet scent, especially in the morning.

Look at the photos, one is yellow, one red, and mine is a brownish purple.

Yug, your 3 JVB (?) crosses are beautiful and have roused my curiosity. The name seems very Malaysian Chinese ( could this be V Wong Pow Nee - named after the first Chief Minister after independence (1957 - 1969) of our Penang State. By the way I could not find the name V Wong Poh Nee or V Wong Pow Nee in the RHS register. I could be wrong but your vandas seem to be hybrids made from V Mimi Palmer ( V Tan Chay Yan x tessellata ) . This could account for the variations in colour and that distinctive scent.

Oh, only the last one (purple lip) is mine. I don't know when the cross was made, where, by whom, if registered, or why named that. I do think it is a V. JVB x V. tessellata.

Beautiful Vanda! How long have you had it and how long before it flowered?

After checking the International Orchid Register under Papilionanda you are correct this is a JVB x tessellata and is named Wong Poh Nee.

I bought it in bloom about 9 months ago, divided it into 3 pieces, two have re-bloomed, and one is currently spiking a 2nd time. Leaves are long semi-terete, and one is in full sun (the one putting up a 2nd bloom), and the other one is under 30% shade with most of my other vandas. Generally, the only ones I like to put in full sun are terete (papilionanthe) or semi-terete. My V. JVB is in full sun.
