Vandas in trouble?

Hi all,
I have two vandas one seems to be doing ok, but other not so even though both produce spikes.

Most concern goes to this one


The leaves look like drying at the base. I removed few and now see light brown stem. Is it started to rot?
I soaked the bottom part (roots upto the beginning of curent lower leaf) in physan 20, but not sure if it will help.
Any suggestions what is wrong with this plant?

On second vanda there is some sap.

Is this thrip infestation again? Again cause few month ago i battle them on phals which are the neighbors with these vandas. But after some time i did not see any thrips and phals were producing undamaged flowers.

I'm not a vanda expert, so I hope someone who is will help you out. But I don't believe #2 is thrips.

To me your plant doing quite well if the plant in stress for what ever reason definitely he refuse to put any spike especially if the plant already acclimatized to your environment, so many factor causing"drying leaves" partly due to lack of water as a result hot season. Sap is common phenomenon for the growing spike and too much causing stained to the leaves or spike.

You both are probably right!

No sign of any insects so far !
And second one with droopy leaves probably does not have enough roots, i noticed some of older roots are dried.

Vanda roots usually dry up if there is a significant drop in humidity or if there was rot in the roots. how is your RH%?

RH level probably is not enough for vanda. Im homegrower and over winter with heat on HR was about 20% so i ran humidifier so it bump it up to 35-40%, on some days it was getting 50-60.
Now with heat off relying on a mother nature about 40% on sunny days and higher on cloudy, with chance of rain of course it goes much higher.
Im trying to compensate lack of humidity by watering once-twice a day.

I knew when i bought it last year that i cant provide it its ideal conditions and i expected it won't rebloom, but it did

About the rot. Is it possible to get root rot if they are bareroot in basket?

What i noticed, sometimes (not necessary on this vanda) i see roots , they are look like normal roots but when you examine its closely the root is dead, its not mushy like if its regular rot, its pretty hard, but inside velomen all dried up ,like packed powder.

Yes. if it is a bacterial or a fungal infection, roots can rot on open baskets too. if Vanda's are infected with fusarium, the you can observe the roots drying up fast and becoming hard and the lower portion of the stem would also show rapid loss of water and would appear like a dried wooden stick. the symptoms that you state are similar to fusarium.

Ok, if assume its fusarium what is the treatment if any?

first is confirming the symptom of fusarium, which is by cutting the infected portion and you should observe a purple ring in the stem. if yes then, cut the portion till the tissue is normal and drench with clearys 3366

I have yet to cure a sick orchid. At least I have prevented disease from spreading to others but haven't saved a diseased one yet. I am not good at recognition of the disease or their treatments.
