Kayak Fishing Anyone?

Fishing the shorelines here stinks, but if you can go out on a kayak, you can catch some pretty good size fish.

Except it can get dangerous so I don't do it anymore. The last time I went out on the ocean, I was dragging a lure and tied into what I assume either an Ahi Tuna or a Mahi mahi. Fishing pole bent to hell, and I was reeling in like crazy but the fish was winning. LOL

He kept dragging me out further and further and the winds came where it was tipping the kayak sideways. I had a choice DIE or let the fish lose!

I was using a 60lb line and my knife was in the cubbie hole below my feet, so it was quite an adventure trying to hang on with one hand, unlatch the cubbie hole to get the knife.

By the time I was able to grab the knife and cut the line, I was way out. I was so exhausted I wasn't sure that I'd make it back in. I guess when you're scared S@#$%less, you're adrenaline takes over and you can do miraculous things ...LOL!

Reminds me of a time when we were sailing and a friend brought another person who took a look at the 23 foot sailboat and said, in his British accent "It's a blooming dinghy!"

He was used to much bigger boats.

But that is some kayak! never seen one with outriggers!

That is a beautiful Mahi! Can't imagine getting back to shore with that in the kayak with you. Cool! We go out kayaking in the river and ocean but I've never fished from one. Our friend does though and the three of us went out one night near Indian River lagoon for bioluminescent kayaking. It's amazing!! Got a big dose of being scared to death myself when right before the complete darkness settled in, a 12 foot gator came way too close to my 8 foot kayak!

LOL Sheryl ! I've never face a gator, would probably have a heart attack if I run into one in a kayak.

But I've had my share of close calls and three is enough. I talked about falling out of a small kayak and couldn't get back on, then this, but I also know about being chased by something big. Like a Whale!

Was out in the ocean with a friend of mine and we spotted a baby whale. So we tried to get closer but didn't know that mama whale was around. Guess she didn't appreciate us getting close, so she started coming after us.

Thankfully we have a hobie kayak with a mirage system (one that you peddle like a bike), and you've never seen two scared guys peddle any faster. Like the man said " I'm too old for this S#@t" !

Harvey: I would have been alright if I took out the Hobie Kayak in the picture. But instead, I took out a smaller 9' kayak without the outrigger. Shudda known betta!

I can only imagine the rush that would be. I see you tube videos of people sitting in their Kayaks and whales coming up right next to them. Crazy!!

LOL! That isn't me bro, it's a guy from the big Island, the one they call "Hawaii". He goes out fishing on his kayak a lot and does very well at it.

I guess fishing is better over there because here in Kauai, the only things I've caught are little fish called Papio. Nothing compared to him. In fact I had better luck fishing while I was in California. I guess I don't know how to catch them here.

But if you've noticed, I have a better looking kayak! Reminds me of those people who come out on the tennis court looking like a pro but can't hit the ball. Har-har!

WOW, Never seen that kind of fish before! Paddling kayak is very tiring. Fighting with the fish to bring it to the surface on a kayak would be even harder I suppose.

Sorry Kauaiguy for the mistake. that is a big mahi-mahi. Around April-June is our peak season for this species but our Indian Ocean mahi-mahi do not reach the size of your Pacific variety. The biggest I've caught was 7 1/2 kg and that is considered big here. We normally use 15 lb line for mahi-mahi.

This is a common fish here in Malaysia and is called 'belitung' in Malay and 'golok' in our Kedah dialect. The reason you don't see them is because they are almost never seen in the markets because our local people do not like to eat them. But I can assure you that the flesh is delicious especially if you make fish and chips with the fillet.

No worries bro as they say here in Hawaii. That was a 40 pound Mahi and sold here in the fish markets at quite a stiff price. The only thing more expensive is Ahi Tuna and it just blew my mind when I found out that it cost more than a Rib Eye Steak.

Rib Eye in the most frequently shopped box store here is about $12.00 a pound, but fresh Ahi Tuna is going for $15.00 a pound.
Who wudda thunk? At that price good thing I prefer Steaks!
