    Default Excessive roots

I purchased a Oncidium Shari Baby a month ago. I received it and it’s so root bound in the pot and hanging all out the pot. I have not repoted since it has two spikes about 2 1/2 ft long but not bloomed. Am I correct NOT TO Repot now? After it blooms will it hurt removing some roots? There are so many outside roots I’ll have no choice to get out of the pot. Pics included.

Hey there. I am not a senior member, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I lead you astray. It's best to wait until after the blooms are gone, as the plant only has so much energy to devote to one thing. It's always best to repot most orchids when you see evidence of new root growth. I would not cut any air roots. In fact, it's a good idea to water them when you water the plant and maybe even mist them once in a while. They still help by taking up moisture and nutrients. I don't grow Oncidium these days, although I do have a Psychopsis, so I'm no expert. These are just general guidelines. If you need any other cultural recommendations just ask. If I don't know, someone else surely will. Enjoy that fragrance, it's so yummy.

I am not Oncidium grower either but I agree with Robb about the general guidelines. Just let it finishes blooming before repotting. Your picture did not get attached.

Count me as part of the "wait" group, but be aware that you're going to do a lot of damage to the fragile oncidiums roots just removing the pot and teasing the old medium out, so try to keep as many of the existing roots intact as possible.
