Cattleya and paph

Sorry to combine them in a desire to be quick. First , I am watering my new paph twice a week. It's in small dark , lava rock and charcoal. Is this too much? Second I think my cat may be getting too much light. At least I hope it is and it's not a disease. It is very light green and leaves are hard, all good, but little black dry spots have begun to appear on latest growth.They don't even go through to the other side just the surface of the leaf. I have moved it a few more inches from the window. Any thoughts?

I'd be nervous about the little black spots I think just because that doesn't sound like any affliction I've ever seen from too much sun.
Light green color yes (and that's not a bad thing) but sunburn is typically a big black spot.

I think I read somewhere in one of my books that too much sun can do that. I treated it with copper fungicide , just in case. Does not seem to be on any leaves but the new one(it was closest to the window) and it doesn't seem to have gotten worse in a week. Wish I could post a pic but hard to do these days with very limited internet access. They are tiny specks and there is no watery ring around them like some funguses .

With no other info, especially no knowledge of your growing conditions, nobody can tell you if the paph watering regimen is appropriate. In general though, and with a few exceptions, it is best to water when the plants need it, and not on a schedule.

Paphs tend to live on the forest floor with their roots traveling in the accumulated loose leaf litter. That suggests that constantly moist and airy is what they require.

Well, It's in the house, in cooler conditions. I hve central air and it's in a south window with oncidiums and catts in front of it. the pot is tiny and I'm trying to water whenever the top is dry , which seems about every 3 to 4 days.

Can you provide more specific info? “Dry on top” may-, or may not suggest a need for watering.

What is the potting medium? Have you unpotted it to check the roots? How is it responding to your conditions?

The “cool” part of your description is a bit worrisome, as I find mine do best if kept warm, but I grow all of my paphs in semi-hydroponic culture.

Well, it's a venustum so tolerant of cooler conditions. IN the winter fall and spring night temps get into the upper 50s low 60s. It's actively growing and producing a new leaf. As stated in the original post, it's in fine bark,lava rock and charcoal. have not unpotted it as it's very small and I knocked it out of the windowsill immediately upon getting it and partially unpotted and shocked it anyway. gonna wait awhile(unless it starts to decline) before putting it through that.
