Brassia caudata

I recently received this little guy, and then discovered a spike! It's not a big one, but it's not a very big plant. It only grew three buds, but they just opened yesterday.

It doesn't have the overpowering sweet fragrance of Brassia verrucosa, but it is fragrant if you stick your nose in it - a bit more musky, but not unpleasant.

The flowers are also darker green, and more darkly spotted than verrucosa. Since both are in bloom I'll post a pic of each flower for comparison.

Nice! I like the darker green and larger spots. I wonder if it puts out its fragrance in the sunlight rather than all the time?

Is this the typical time for brassias to bloom? Just got mine, and it's blooming too.

Yes, Mehera, it's typically Jun-July, but a few species do bloom in the late fall.

Oops--guess I lied. Checked the tag again and it's a Brsdm. Lillian Oka 'Bonanza". For some reason I was thinking brassia because it has large spiders and a clove/vanilla fragrance.

I do have a Brassia Rex 'Sakata', but it's not spiking.

And to think, 8 months ago I couldnt tell the difference between a Phal and Paph, or Dend from Vanda(still kinda can't )
and now I know a brassia when I see one.

Brassias are very cool, Tindo, but the flowers don't last too long. Particularly in the summer heat (which is when they bloom.) You wait for all the sprays to fully deploy and the first ones are fading before the last ones open.
