Hummer frenzy!

The hummingbirds here at my house are going nuts. Suddenly there are dozens of them that hang around my feeder. Yesterday they drained a newly filled feeder in one day! My theory is that there are lots of little fledglings and they have been shown by mom where the pickings are easy in preparation for their big flight south in a few weeks.

At your location, they are probably already on the move! It's amazing how fast feeders go down during migration. I have a 32 ounce feeder and during late Sept. and Oct I fill it either every day or every other day.

I was thinking the same - if they're coming from northern climes, they may have already started their migration! They eat a large diet of insects. The nectar and sugar water is a way to top off their tanks for the arduous job of migration.

If I were to do anything to advance THAT kind of Hummer, my son would hunt me down and kill me. Here in the mtns, you actually do have legitimate need for an SUV, but I still have to argue with him about THAT too.

Is he a Green Peacey kind of guy? Even for SUV's, hummers are a bit extreme.

Let's be clear that I have a humble Chevy Blazer. Only place around here you see Hummers is places like Aspen and Vail where someone thinks they are being cool. Son is a hard core mountain exercise enthusiast--but nothing motorized. We kind of like to enjoy the forest in its quiet, comtemplative state, but obviously some don't agree with us.

I hate it when the hummingbirds finally leave for the season (usually about the third week in Sept here). For me it is the chief indicator of another long winter. They come back in May.

I miss the hummingbirds we had them up in MD but haven't seen but one down here in 3 years. As for the big 4 wheel Hummer there are lots of them. Lordy only knows why, no snow, hills or mud. Go figure. Must be the mine is bigger than yours thing. HEHE!!!
