Is your water particularly hard, Kirstie? I just use tap water in my humidifiers. I'd save the distilled water for my coffee.

I'm in desperate need of more moisture for the orchids already. This misting thing has damaged my elbow and I can't pick up my coffee cup and water bottle without pain. That's not OK!
I have a regular old humidifier - a little bedside one that's maybe a gallon or 2? I am guessing distilled water costs less than $1 at the store / gallon, but THAT cuts into coffee money and adds up.
Can I boil it or something??
And PS. what are the Neo hybrids that grow small and very similar to Neos?

hehe
I don't think it's very hard or soft. It's pretty good I think. It's city water - is that a universal answer or do some cities have different water? I don't have a filter in my humidifier. I'm tired of trying to find the right one and paying for them.
My husband is really looking forward to a science experiment - making a distiller in the basement... think if we get enough water, we can distill other things?? Or something? ;c)
You only need distilled water if you use an ultrasonic humidifier. If you have the regular heat based humidifier, tap water is fine. As for the Neo hybrids, I think one is Neostylis Lou Sneary..
I got 3 neo hybrids that are smaller than my regular white noe.
Neostylis Lou Sneary
Dawinara Charm 'blue star'
3rd one has a long name and I forgot.
My Lou Sneary has a new spike now, but it is still quite small. I will post a picture of them when I got home.
Here are my hybrids. The reference plant is my regular Furan, it is kind of big.
1. Ascda. Blue Tahourdin x Neof. falcata (top left)
2. Darwinara Charm 'Blue Star' (top right)
3. Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Lea' (bottom)
Oh thanks for the pics! I am not tempting myself with orchid shopping much anymore, but I know I am going to be trying to get some of these and other tiny Neo hybrids...
Tiki, I don't understand why you need distilled water for a humidifier?????
Check out some of the super markets there is one here that has a big ro water machine they sells it with the jug for 39 cents a gallon .
Tindo sometimes the water has a lot of calcium or lime that clogs things up . The ultra sonic types have an auto shut off thing that will crud up and not work to turn off the humidifier when it runs dry . Gin
I was also told that it would put gunk on my plants and be hard to get off. I'm trying regular water - which would be cheaper and easier for lazy me.
