California sub species Red Shouldered Hawk

Here are some photos of "my" Red Shouldered Hawk, hunting on the limb of the pepper tree that backs to my patio. He stayed for a few minutes, but was aware I was watching him/her. Sorry the photos aren't better, these were taken without a tripod with the camera as telephoto as it would go, so a little shaky. He's about 45 feet from me, and I was shooting through a window and screen.

Note the red streak down the wing - hence red shouldered, and the magnificent red breast. Male and Female have the same markings.

What a handsome bird! I like the photos, Diane. They have a misty "I'm there looking out that window at him" quality. Thanks for sharing 'your' Red Shouldered Hawk. Hope he got a good spider or mouse meal LOL!!

Beautiful photos Diane and Idaho! These birds have such a dignified demeanor. Most of my bird photos end up in silhouette, but you can actually see the plumage patterns on your pics.

The sun's at a low angle in Steve's shot, which is why you can see the color of his plummage - the hawk's, not Steve's.
