Picked this up today to use as a stud plant in my schomb crossings. I am hoping to get some small plants with a long spike. The picture isn't that great, so I'll follow up tomorrow with something better.

Wow - do Schombs and Sophs cross? That's like trying to mate a mouse and an elephant. Will you cross in both directions, Aaron?
I can see progeny from one direction: the diminutive plant will have a 5" flower that will pull the pot over into a face plant.
In the other direction, you'll have a towering flower spike ten feet tall, but a step ladder will be required so you can view the bloom with a magnifying glass!
Good luck!

That's a beauty! And interesting cross.... but unlike McPessimistI think you might get a really nice intermediate plant with a medium size flower. It will likely have lovely undulating petals with a rich red colour. hmm... put me down for a plant will ya... now I just need to organise Quarantine

I think it is gonna be a great cross! Best of luck with it.

Thanks all! I am actually pretty sure that the flower will turn out very well. I know of a cross made in South America that was made using this very same Sophronitis and undulata. I am planning to use a rosea, and a brysiana in this cross. Making each plant the parent. We'll have to wait and see!
'stud orchid' made me laugh
nice bloom, though, and a cool idea![]()
What about schombs and Rynch's? OH!
I saw them today, I thought they were cute. I will take one of the mutts if you can't find a home for them.

Actually the flowers of Soph aren't all that terribly small, Julie. Usually they are about 3/4-1" across, quite large for the size of the plant. The biggest detractant of Soph [to me at any rate], is that it only blooms once a year. Fortunately, hybrids using Soph often bloom more often than that.
