bare canes

Hello,

I've searched the net as well as your forum, and I can't seem to find any info about bare canes.

My husband bought a dendrobium for me at a grocery store. It was in pretty bad shape when I got it, but I've had it for 6 months or so and it seems to be doing well with new growth, etc.

The only thing that concerns me is it has 9 bare canes. The bare canes range in height from 1-6 inches. Will these canes grow more leaves? Should they be trimmed? Is that normal?

I'm not great with dends but,
Those bare canes will send flowers under right conditions such as a cool dry rest,
New leaves will come from new canes

You probably have a Phal. type Dendrobium , the old canes provide food ect. for the others don't cut them off . they like to dry some between waterings , no cool down ,they like warm , lots of light . If it is the type I think it is it will produce the bloom spike from the top of the newer canes .Hope this helps Gin

There's so much variety within the Dendrobium genus, it's hard to say exactly what culture your plant wants. But don't cut the canes!

Dends are amazingly resilient. Some are deciduous and drop their leaves in the winter, as Gin mentioned. Even it it's not that type, and it's upset, it still can survive.

Do you have a name for the plant? I can look it up and tell you what culture it would like. If not, we'll go with sort of a general scenario - it should keep it alive, and it may or may not bloom again.

I replied last night to say that if I recall, the tag on the plant when I got it did say Dendrobium phal-something.

The most recent spike of flowers came up from a cane that has 2 leaves on it.

As long as the old bare canes are not a problem, I won't worry about the plant.

dendrobium phalaenopsis....Actually some growers cut the canes after a while on large plants. It triggers them to sprout new canes, where it was cut. I don't think you should cut them yet, because they are storing some useful nutrients right now for the new growth. To bloom give them lots of light...probably why I failed to bloom one

I wouldn't cut anything until you were sure the plant was correctly labeled. Just my thoughts.
