Phalaenopsis Blooms

These are some phals that I posted this past winter and have graced my GH with another show. The flowers don't seem to be as large as the first go around and the last flower pictured bloomed asymmetrical

I believe that is generally the way it goes with a second blooming in the season. The flowers are a bit smaller since the plant has not stored up enough energy for another big show. I bet they will be large and symmetrical next season after a bit of a rest. Do you cut the spikes off on your phals or do you allow them to rebloom on the same spikes?

BTW, I think they are all lovely. My favorite is the classic white one though.

I side with those who believe cutting the spike completely off after the flowers look whimpy for this very reason that subsequent flowers from old spikes "tend" to be smaller as you said. These started new spikes from the old before the flowers got nasty looking so I just left the old spike. Won't be the case when these flowers have seen their better days. Thanks for the compliments.

Our phals do the same thing, Howard. If we don't get the spikes cut off, the flowers come back and the show is smaller. I just have a hard time cutting off the spike once it starts making buds ...hehehe

I think any of us growing phals or other chids that potentially will rebloom have a hard time removing the new spike from the old...we all love to experience that "second chance". Thanks, again, for your wonderful compliments

That third one is really interesting.... and they all have such intricate detail in the central colors!
