Also, consider using a layer of clear bubble wrap against the window. You can seal up the cracks in the window frame and if you are creative with how you do it, it can look pretty cool.
The rotating fan is probably good because the air movement is good for phals as long as they don't get a blast of cold temperature. And a bowl or pan of water on the radiator will add humidity that is good for your own skin and sinusses as well as for the orchids.
I have found a "loose" sort of indicator for humidity by putting a pine-cone near the flower pots. When the air is too dry, the pine-cone is wide open, and when the humidity rises, I notice that the scales fold down a little. I haven't yet "calibrated" it to the actual percentage,.

Last night I was noticing the wood and rice paper covers, over the windows in our Dharma room (where we practice, very simple, very Asian). There is a Art supply store down the road... with lots of beautiful hand made paper sheets. They range from very thick to almost transparent. There is an amazing range of colors... including white that would add a pleasant, yet mellow light to the room. Great for hiding BUBBLE WRAP! I haven't been so creative in years... thank you! AND... Pine Cones to check for the humidity??? This is GREAT, I LOVE PINE CONES!!!
But since then, I have adopted 3 more Orchids! I was going to try and get a new type, other than a Phal... and a "healthy" specimen too. (as BD suggested, as to cheer me up!) However... it must be my "Karma" to take on the sick and the neglected. Do not know how I am going to afford this growing family... and its amazing how other people try and talk me out of them... "they are too difficult to grow" or "why even bother wasting money, they are just going to die"... etc. Ugh! I think we... the people who love these plants, are as strange and exotic as the plants are. Of course I will be putting up pictures of the "new children" soon, if I didn't what kind of parent would I be?
please... is there a post, page, link or thread that i can read that gives me some simple, basic info? Perhaps its the sickness... but I am sweating here trying to understand all this.... even though the thought of hanging my Orchids upside down or siddy ways, is making me giggle!
