Is Shari Baby easy to grow?

I have heard about the Shari Baby orchid and my dd is named Sherri, soooo, I would really love to obtain one of those this Thursday when I go to to nearby orchid nursery. Are they hard to grow? What kind of light requirements do they have?

There is a very large Shari Baby on a post from Orchidman dated 04-29-08 under Phal. Onc. photo thread.Should be med.-bright light,mild to warm nights and days,depending on species,high humidity and kept evenly moist.From what I have read.I currently do not have one.I hope this helps. Rich

Shari baby will get large. Keep that in mind. South Carolina should be plenty humid and warm enough in summer to keep her outdoors where she gets morning sun and noontime shade. how are the winters? Anything below 50 degrees and you will want to be able to haul her into the warm.

I find it a very easy plant and the fragrance of vanilla and chocolate makes it collection worthy for me.

Wonderful plant that grows well for most. They get big fast.

I do have a sharry baby, and I bought it large (8' pot) and its currently in S&H and trying to grow out of the pot!! I think you will like it - its not hard to grow, and puts on nice new growth frequently. I would say medium bright light - morning direct sun only if any (the oncid family orchids have strappy thin leaves that will burn quickly if left in afternoon sun), high humidity around the roots because they are thin roots, and you'll have a good plant!! I have mine in a southern window because I have nowhere else to put it, but it has a fan on it alllll day so the leaves don't burn. Good luck! Show us pics when you get one! Easy to grow. But it hasn't bloomed for me for a while....maybe soon. Make sure it doesn't dry out too much or the leaves get pleated. I am thinking of transfering mine to S/H now.

Thanks for all the great info! I would be keeping it inside, at least during the winter because we do go below 50 at times. I have a southern window, an eastern window and a western window, so there should be somewhere with the right amount of light, I am hoping. Right now, we have a good deal of humidity in the house -- it is in the 70s -- so I am not worried about that. It will drop when we have to turn the heat on, but I can always add humidity trays if needed.

When i grew mine at home, I wintered it on a rack in front of a western facing glass sliding door. Be sure to rotate it and all plants that you are growing with window light, at least until they spike then no longer rotate them. I kept a floor model, wicking-type humidifier going in my sun room during the central heating months. The plants as well as my sinuses appreciated it.

As I understand it, this is an orchid that likes to grow in sphagnum moss as opposed to a bark mix. Can anyone confirm?
