Brassia Eternal Wind Sato (RVO!)

Here is the beautiful Brassia I got from Louis. All but two blooms on the first spike have opened, so I thought it was time to snap a photo. And lucky me, there is a second spike very early in its development, so I get to watch the whole thing over again.
I apologize to Louis...I just noticed in the photo the largest pseudobulb is a bit shriveled I guess I've been underwatering it a bit because it was as plump as a baby's tush when I received it. Now it looks a little more like granny's tush. I'll have to remedy this promptly! I think this is an unconscious attempt to make it appear like I didn't water my Brassia Rex to death earlier this year .

At any rate, it is a great plant. Thanks again Louis.

Oh, and Gin, do you notice anything else attractive in the photo? I just love them, and for now I prefer them as accents on the buffett rather than mounts!

My brassia is in spike - I love them while they last! How long does yours bloom? Mine is a species and if I recall last spring it only lasted for a couple of weeks. They're so showy though. Enjoy!

It is the newest leaf opened on a Strelitzia nicolai (white form) which is commonly called the Bird of Paradise. Most people are familiar with the orange form (which I also have). It recently got moved from an upstairs bedroom down with the orchids at the patio because of the height of it...it's cramping nine foot ceilings now. Man I need that greenhouse, fast! Most of the rest of the plant doesn't show up in the photo.

That is a Bird of Paradise plant? Whoa, its Big!! I thought its a banana plant..lol.

Very nice Brassia, Matt. I have a question though. Why is it that your Brassia and other people's Brassia are in bloom now in Spring, while mine don't bloom until late summer to Autumn? Sorry but mine is just a division acquired a long time ago and it has no tag but the flowers are similar to pictures of Brassia rex I have seen.

Matt, it's really hard to gage how much water and fertilizer to give a plant when it's in the process of budding to keep the pseudobulb from shriveling. You try to give just enough to compensate for the loss of water and nutrients into the spike, but give too much, and you start to rot the roots. PBs are storage organs, so yours did exactly what it was supposed to do. As long as it didn't shrivel too drastically (and it didn't), the way you did it there is totally fine.

PS: that bird of paradise leaf is gorgeous--wish the leaves on our orange one here looked as full and good.

Tanya, your clone may just be a fall bloomer. Just because it's a Brassia doesn't mean they all bloom in the same season, and if it's an intergeneric, the blooming season can be any time. We have Odontobrassias with very similar-looking flowers that only bloom in the fall.
