    Cool Epidendrum Nocturnum

I was so excited to find an open bud from this plant! We had a downpour the entire day before and then I went out and found a bud beginning to open. It's not a perfect flower...but i'll take the weird thing. It looks like it's trying to do a luau with both petals going to one side. It's also at a weird angle which makes it difficult to get a decent picture. Hopefully as this plant continues blooming it figures out which way to turn and how to look a little less goofy! Maybe it's still a young plant? The pod is also growing nicely. I want to find a mossy tree to sit it in when the pod gets big and fat...

Definetly an eye catcher! Gorgeous colour and shape! Not sure if you already know but for future plans, just an idea, it is easily and widely available ( hopefully in your neck of the woods aswell), packets of moss spores specialist available for bonsai enthusiasts. Managed to culture 2 forms, a club and a tropical sheet moss. Took a short while to burst into life but soon spread its wings and suprisingly quickly.

I used it for dart frog/ mantella terrariums and found with hindsight that it was a positive move to make, considering one year on I would of regretted not doing it, being pleased with it aesthetically. Just a thought for your near future garden plans. Another two cents while im here, painting/ brushing live natural yoghurt on branch/ stump, also encourages moss/ lichen and fern growth. Obviously with you being in Florida I dont want you to endure an unwelcome mass of bugs etc that surround you attracted to the yoghurt, if ofcourse you have such natives as athreat/ nuisance!.

To my way of thinking it is a cute bloom that has distinguished itself by being the sole bloom in the middle of a storm. Congratulations on a survivor that makes you happy. AL

Considering the problems you had getting a flower to open on this plant, I'm glad you finally got to see one open.

I hope the seeds do well and you end up with some babies growing in whatever tree you place it, Connie. Glad you got to see the bloom - finally!!

    cheers,
    BD
