Ever wondered how your Dendrobium grows new canes?

Hello everyone. Never one to disappoint I have some staggeringly good news:

My dendrobium is not dead. Repeat, not dead. In the interests of goodwill to the orchid growing community I now wish to show you how my dendrobium is sprouting a new cane. I never could figure out where they come from. I was waiting for one to rise up from the dirt but no! It's coming out from the base of the largest existing cane.







I'd like to thank the user "walingwaling" who advised more light for this plant as after I moved it to the window we have now got new growth. That advice came on 12th Dec 2011 and it's now 14th Jan 2012. That's one month and we have results so thanks again for that!

jealous! I have a Den. I am patiently waiting on to show me some kind of new growth! Guess there's always hope, huh? At least I know what to look for now. Thanks for the info

Bravo Mike! Dendros amongst others, baring in mind the huge family within, seem to respond quite well here in UK to the autumn to winter/ new year temperature and photoperiod changes. Acts as a good trigger for not only resuming growth but ofcourse encouraging bloom time. I have a small cross section of dendros with varying needs and while ive killed a fare few beautiees, this one thing they do share. I thrive (as do most orchid growers) on any positive visual signs such as this esp so early.

I was doomed with dends/ oncids until a little mouse told me on here to do one thing and adhere to it (oncids too) and that was to simply reduce roots exposure to wet feet and be aware of toxicity issues so those lush green root tips dont burn!
