Jewel Orchids

does anyone grow Jewel Orchids? I would like to know if they are worth growing.

I dont grow jewel orchids but I think they grown mainly for their foliage.

I was told that the blooms do not last long, and that large plants were hard to come by.

I have one. I like it alot. The leaves are SOOOO cool, it is VERY easy to grow (reason why I bought one, I needed a confidence builder). The flowers are alot nicer than I thought they would be. It looks more like a regular house plant than an orchid. It propagates easy -- you break off a piece of the rhimzone and stick it in some sphag and it roots easily. I guess I would say, get one. They are easy, and if you really aren't crazy about it, give it to someone else. This plant does really really well in very low light conditions. If it gets too much, the leaves will fade quickly and they don't recover.

I assume you are talking about Ludisia discolor. Many genera are refered to as "Jewel Orchids" including Ludisia, Anoectochilus, Macodes, Goodyera, etc... Ludisia are VERY easy to grow as long as you give them VERY shady conditions. I grow mine in a bathroom with a tiny, (1'x2') north facing window and they love it! Be sure to keet them moist too. I grow mine in 100% peat moss. Check out the trade forum as I have one to trade. Good luck.
