Three Den pods

And that about as technical as I can get. I'm really REALLY new but have been reading tons on this pod business.....

I would love to try all the experiments I've read on here but I'm afraid I'm totally unprepared and I'm thinking those seeds are going to "pop their pods" anytime now.....

Hi Doodlekitty,
First, when you see the pod turns light yellow you need to cover the pod by a coffee filter because the pop can bust anytime and you loose your seed.
Second, you need to prepare your "equipments and tools" such as:
- Baby food jars to sow seed;
- Chlorox , alcohol, and peroxid hydrogen and a box for sterilization;
- Buy seed sowing media and prepare it (mix and autoclave) at least a week a head to see if there's contamination in the jar or not.
Third, doooo it and have fun.

thanks Terminator....but I guess I should have been more specific...I don't have the set-up you mentioned (autoclave, etc.) and don't think I have enough time to learn to do all this before the pods pop...I was trying to pm atester but I don't have "pm" capability.

ATester....if you're reading this, can you "do" my pods...lol???

It's a bit long, but I think you will find it helpfull!

And another thing, you really don't need an autoclave to sterilize! You don't even need a presure cooker.. I can make you a guide to sterilizing using a normal large sized pot and some silicone if you would like

If you just cover the seed pods with a filter of some sort as described above you can store them for a little while till you are ready!

It reallt isn't as terribly difficult as it sounds - I promise!

BY THE WAY: I got this den from a friend of a friend of a friend and he says its called "Dendrobium tentacalus Alba" but I cannot find any information on this type of orchid....I do have pics of it in bloom...that should help. I crossed it with another den "superblum" (it has a lavender bloom) so other than knowing that they're both "dens" I'm not sure what I have.

I'll be glad to help on the "do it yourself" medium and sterilization part, I've been doing many experiments on the sterilization without a pressure cooker or autoclave, and the results are good, around 80-90% succes rate on the sterilization.. I haven't tried sowing yet, but I have some seedpods maturing at the moment .

Hi Doodle,

It sounds like you're describing Diplocaulobium (Dcm) tentaculatum. It's a genus closely allied with Dendrobiums and this species is sometimes referred to as Dend. tentaculatum. It's a lovely flower! Is this similar to what you remember?

You probably crossed it with Dend. superbum, which is more correctly called Dend. anosmum.

Do these look like the parents? The flower on the Dcm would have been more pure white if it were a var. alba.

If this is the cross, then I'd love a couple of seedlings if you and Aaron are successful! This cross hasn't been registered yet, and those are two great species parents!

Wow this is exciting!! Piper it looks nothing like the dend. tentaculatum and is almost exactly like the Dend. Anosmum...only one is white and one is lavender/purple like in the pic. I'm going to look on my pc right now to get the pics.
