They are types of terrestrial orchids. Some of the families are; Ludisia(formerly Haemaria), Anoectochilus, Dossinia, Goodyera, and Macodes.
They are called jewel orchids because of their foliage colors and patterning. Most people grow these for their beautiful foliage rather than their flowers.

Here is a photo of Goodyera pubescens I took last year. It is considered a jewel orchid.
Here is a shot of the blooms.
I have a ludisia too, but cannot locate a photo of it right now.
