Epidendrum nocturnum

I never know if I will get a flower bud to open before it self pollinates on this plant. Looks like it wanted to bloom this time. These are native to Florida, but this one came from a nursery where they grow them from seed. I had three seed pods last time. I took one out back and sprinkled the seeds all over our oak tree with moss on the trunk.

It is amazing how many orchids you grow are on my w.l. I had a seedling of this one, but didn't do well with it at all. I do have a special interest in FL natives when I can find them comercially. Nice one!

Thank You. This one hangs with the vandas. It likes it best hanging under the bamboo tree, where it gets full morning and afternoon sun. There is also good air movement on that corner. And, it is fertilized/watered/sprayed the same as the vandas. You will find these are frustrating because half the time the flower bud self pollinates before it even opens. That said, once they start blooming you get one bud after another. I will look up where I bought mine and p.m. you. This arrived in blooming size, potted in the basket and has been happily growing since I got it. They do not grow fast, just be patient on that end if you buy a small one. Hope this helps...

Connie, if this is anything like cilaris, I find that the buds will have what seems to be a starchy coating that can create issues with buds opening. I rinse the buds off by hand and it seems to help.

It's not that the flowers can't open. This species has a tendency to pollinate itself before the bud even opens. After it has self pollinated it doesn't matter if you pry it open. The flower drys out and the seed pod begins to develop. When they open and self pollinate it is called autogamous, and when they pollinate before the flower opens they are called cleistogamous. Mine is all of the above...lol!

i was TOLD with cleisto. the dryer u keep them at blooming...the less it happens....i have no experience with this..just sharing lolol....this species is native to my country also...along with Epi. ciliare
